Evaluation Methodology
The Chamblee Dining Guide evaluates restaurants using a structured scoring system designed to recognize culinary excellence while also honoring the cultural significance of food and dining spaces.
Restaurants are assessed using both professional restaurant experience and ethnographic observation methods. These approaches allow the guide to evaluate not only the technical quality of food and service, but also the cultural meanings and social environments that shape dining experiences.
In addition to the formal scoring rubric, (auto)ethnographic field notes are used to supplement the numerical ratings. Ethnographic field notes document observations about the restaurant environment, interactions between staff and guests, atmosphere, cultural symbols, and the ways food is presented and experienced within a particular community context.
Autoethnographic reflection is also incorporated when appropriate. Autoethnography recognizes the role of the researcher’s own lived experience, background, and cultural perspective in shaping interpretation. In the context of the guide, these reflections help illuminate how food, memory, culture, and place intersect within the dining experience.
Together, the scoring rubric and (auto)ethnographic field notes provide a fuller picture of each restaurant, recognizing that dining is not only about cuisine but also about culture, storytelling, and community.
